Speak out for the fish!

Join community at the DNR Fish Hatchery Open House in Spooner, Wisconsin to raise awareness about the Line 5 pipeline’s threats to fish populations in northern Wisconsin. Bring signs and educational materials!

Background

Both the current Enbridge Line 5 and the proposed new pipeline segment through Ashland and Iron Counties threaten fishing in Chequamegon Bay, Lake Superior, and the trout streams in the Bad River Watershed.

Enbridge’s proposed reroute of Line 5 would threaten more than 100 rivers and streams in the Bad River watershed. This watershed is an outstanding ecological area with spawning grounds for numerous fish species including sturgeon, trout, walleye, whitefish, and more.

Mapping threats to fish populations

Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) has undertaken research as reported in tinyurl.com/PipelineRiskReport. While the report has a major focus on the impacts of the current Enbridge Line 5 through the reservation, findings are applicable to all the waters in the Watershed should the new 42-mile Line 5 be permitted, as it circumvents the entire watershed and thus actually poses a greater threat to fish within the entire region.

This is a map produced by GLIFWC, which identifies the documented Lake Trout spawning grounds which would be impacted by an Enbridge Line 5 oil spill. It is one of several maps with additional details on Whitefish, Siscowet and Herring.
