An international assembly of grassroots water protectors, clean air-advocates, and anti-fossil fuel organizers secured a meeting with the Canadian Consulate in Detroit on Tuesday, May 14th at 12:00 noon. This marks the most recent step in ongoing efforts to stop Enbridge tar sands pipelines in the great lakes region.

At the meeting organizers will deliver:
A rebuttal letter to the 1977 treaty that Canada has invoked in order to keep Line 5 running despite ongoing trespass on sovereign tribal land and the revocation of Enbridge's easement in the straits of Mackinac, and
An ultimatum issued by Canadian organizers vowing to launch as campaign of civil resistance if the Canadian government does not implement a plan to shut down Line 9 in a timely manner. (Read the English translation here.)
Organizers will be asking that the Consulate staff:
Urge their boss - Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly - to retract her ministry' use of the 1977 pipeline agreement to perpetuate Line 5, and
Urge Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson to announce a plan to close the Line 9 before 2030 by reducing its flow by at least 20% per year, starting now.
