“Bad River” Opens Theatrically on March 15 in Select Cities

 

Bad River, the powerful new documentary film written and directed by award-winning filmmaker, Mary Mazzio (I Am Jane Doe, A Most Beautiful Thing) and narrated by Indigenous activist and model Quannah ChasingHorse along with award-winning actor Edward Norton (Primal Fear, American History X, Birdman), chronicles the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band and its ongoing fight for sovereignty, a story which unfolds in a groundbreaking way through a series of shocking revelations, devastating losses, and a powerful legacy of defiance and resilience. This inspiring project brings us through an epic sweep of history into the present, with a David vs. Goliath battle to save Lake Superior, the largest freshwater resource in America. As Eldred Corbine, a Bad River Tribal Elder declares: “We gotta protect it... die for it, if we have to.”

The film is also executive produced by Mato Wayuhi (Reservation Dogs), Taylor Hensel (Reservation Dogs, Reciprocity Project), Victor Lopez-Carmen (former co-chair of the UN’s Indigenous Youth Caucus), Tracy Rector (Nia Tero), and Alec Sokolow (Toy Story).

About the Filmmakers:
Mary Mazzio – Writer, Director, Producer

In all her films, Mary Mazzio explores the concept of overcoming obstacles, whether it is a fight for social change (A Hero for Daisy, I Am Jane Doe), or issues of poverty and lack of opportunity (A Most Beautiful Thing, Ten9Eight, Underwater Dreams). Her mission of shedding light on compelling narratives of social significance has made her one of the country’s most prominent socially impactful

filmmakers. All of Mazzio’s films are about ordinary people doing extraordinary things – defying expectations and challenging assumptions of who and what they can achieve. In 2000, Mazzio founded 50 Eggs, Inc., an independent film production company dedicated to making socially impactful films.

Allison Abner – Producer

Allison Abner has been a writer-producer on numerous award-winning television series, including Golden Globe-nominated Narcos, Emmy Award- winning The West Wing,and NAACP Image Award-winning mini- series Self Made. Abner also co-founded the bipartisan Advisory Council on Human Trafficking, which advised the White House on President Obama’s domestic anti-trafficking initiative. She serves on the Writers' Guild of America PAC board, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health’s Moore Center

Advisory Board, Common Sense Media’s Gender Equity Advisory Board, and The ONE Campaign. Allison is a descendant of the Stockbridge Munsee Band.

Grant Hill – Producer

A seven-time NBA All-Star, Hall of Fame inductee, and part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks, Grant Hill is a household name across the country. He continues to excel off the court, from sports broadcasting to real estate investments to founding a private equity mezzanine fund. Additionally, Grant formed Point Road Productions, which has co-produced four documentary films, including two with Mary

Mazzio, A Most Beautiful Thing and Bad River. His contributions to charity work, academic scholarships, and national initiatives for healthier lifestyles demonstrate Grant’s commitment to his community.
